The calf tied with a small rope is restless to be free. Its area of freedom is limited to the circular area of radius equal to the length of the rope. In case of the cow the length of the rope is more so that its relatively freer. However its content with the shelter and food it has near by. The absolutely free calf seems to observe the conditions of both.
The calves and the cow in the painting are symbolic of general human conditioning.
The tied calf : Student life in which we struggle to be free from books, schools in general all the disciplines imposed by society :)
The tied but resting cow : So called settled life, in which never ending dissatisfaction makes our comfort zone :)
The free calf : The phase of life in which we grow mature, grow young, grow honest and hence innocent, grow wise :)
