Difference Between Spray Paint vs Oil Paint

SHORT INFO. & HISTORY
Oil paint is the one of the ancient art media that contains different color pigments and the pigments are blended with the dry oil based binders like poppy seed oil, walnut oil, linseed oil, safflower oil etc. Most importanatly it is a type of slow-drying paint.
Oil paint was invented long ago. Oil paints were first used in Asia as early as the 7th century AD. The oldest known oil paintings are Buddhist murals created almost at 650 AD. The paintings are created by walnut and poppy seed oils. The paintings are located in cave-like rooms carved from the cliffs of Bamiyan Valley of Afghanistan. Later it was used by most famous artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso.

On the other hand, Spray paints is a moren painting media which is also oil-based paint that dries quickly as compared to the oil paint, and they last longer than latex paint (water based paints). Spray paint technique is mostly used to spray coating material such as paint, ink, varnish onto a painting surface.
In the early 1880s, it was utilized on the South Pacific Railroad. Some well-known spray painting artists are Bansky, JeanMichel Basquiat, and Shepard Fairey. In 1949, Edward Seymour invented a spray paint that could be applied using compressed air in a can.
COMPOSITION
The oil paint is a composition of color pigments and drying oils like poppy seed oil, walnut oil, linseed oil, safflower oil etc. To incraese the saturation and opacity, the viscosity of the paint may be modified by the addition of a solvent such as turpentine or white spirit, and varnish may be added to increase the glossiness of the dried oil paint film.

On the contrary, In the spray painting technique, aerosol paint is frequently utilised as the medium. In a can, aerosol paint is kept in a highly compressed form. Aerosol paints frequently contain oil-based color pigments as well as volatile hydrocarbons like propane, n-butane, and isobutane. Aluminum is used to produce spray paint cans so they are more durable.
SPECIFIC PROPERTIES
The artist can achieve a wide variety of opacity and intensity in their work with oil paint. It enables artists to overlay various colors and mix them to create magnificent works of art. Additionally, an artist can create a work gradually and make modifications or corrections with ease because oil paint dries slowly.

But, Because the spray paint is oil based, it is most likely waterproof. As the paint is sprayed, the water quickly evaporates as well, leaving a flexible acrylic coating in its place. Since the color is durable and permanent, artists can rework their work without bleeding and create the illusion of a laminated surface. The painting won't be able to endure sunlight and may fade if a UV protection layer isn't applied.
KEY FEATURES
It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor application on wood and metal because to its hard wearing characteristics and brilliant hues, yet it is widely used for making indoor portraits. Check here some oil portraits. It has lately been employed in paint-on-glass animation due to its delayed drying qualities.

In opposition, Spray paintings can be used for indoor as well as outdoor applications, but it is widely used for outdoor applications like street paintings, wall paintings, Graffiti art etc. Paintings made with spray paint can be flexible, resilient, and toned in a variety of colors. Spray brushes, spray cans, spray booths, and spray guns are used to apply the paint. In comparison to encaustic painting and traditional brush paint, spray paint dries more quickly.
SURFACE OR MEDIA
Oil Paint has the ability to bond to many different surfaces, and mediums can be used to modify their binding characteristics. Oil Paints can be used on canvas, tempera, wood, glass and a range of other materials. Check different oil paintings here.

Although, Spray paint is suitable for apply on non-porous materials, such as wood, metal, glass, ceramic, stone or plastic etc. Spray painting is traditionally used on surfaces such as billboards. Unlike oil paint, the spray paint is dispensed as mist that is easily applied to a variety of surfaces, for example Graffiti artist uses spray paint for making Street Art as well as Graffiti art on interior and exterior of buildings, trains, etc. For being oil based spray paints are found to be superior rust proofing for metal surface.
OTHER SPECIFIALITIES
Oil paint can be purchased as paste or pigment powder. The ratios of the pigment and binders in the paste are predetermined, but with powdered pigments, the binder must be manually mixed. Beginners are advised to use paste-type oil paint, however pros prefer to manually mix because they are familiar with the oil color pigment to binder ratio. Oil paints blend easily, enabling the development of numerous light and shadow features as well as subtle color changes. Turpentine or other thinning agents can be used to thin oil paintings so that artists can layer their creations. Professional artists employ oil paints that are made and developed to withstand chemical reactions brought on by exposure to water, ultraviolet light, and oxidation.

Instead, Since spray painting dries more quickly than other methods of painting, it is great for producing multi-layered artworks. Because it may be applied to pre-shaped frames, it is even more helpful for quick painting applications. The painted layers of a spary painting, however, cannot be changed easily; as a result, the artist must be exceedingly skilled and knowledgeable. Although spray painting, like graffiti art, is frequently observed to be exposed to sunlight throughout the day, it lasts longer thanks to the UV resistant coating.
TOXICITY AND VEGAN FRIENDLY
Despite the fact that some oil paints are non-toxic, it is not advisable to apply them directly to the skin because some of the pigments could be toxic. The oil paint could irritate your skin if it gets on it. Almost all types of oil paints are not vegan friendly because they use oil as the pigment binder and some of those binders have animal origins.

Yet, Spray paint is a toxic painting media. Spray painting should only be done outside or in a well-ventilated area. It also includes volatile hydrocarbons, which make cache fires more likely and are bad for inhaling. Mineral-like spirit is needed to clean hands or outside surfaces because the spray paint is oil-based. The spray paints are created using synthetic ingredients and petrochemicals. They are all entirely vegan-friendly as a result.
