Difference Between Spray Painting and Acrylic Painting

SHORT INFO. & HISTORY
Modern oil-based paints like spray paint or in general the enamel spray paint last longer than acrylic paint. Spray painting is a quick drying painting technique used to apply coating materials to a painting surface, such as paint, ink, and varnish.
Spray painting is a modern painting technique. In the early 1880s, it was utilized on the South Pacific Railroad. Some well-known spray painting artists are Bansky, JeanMichel Basquiat, and Shepard Fairey. In 1949, Edward Seymour invented a spray paint that could be applied using compressed air in a can.

On the other hand, Acrylic Paint is a fast drying water based painting. Acrylic painting resembles the qualities of oil paint, watercolor and gauache paints.
The acrylic painting was invented by Otto Rohm and introduced around 1934 by Leonard Bocour and Sam Golden. Later it was used by most famous artists like Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Robert Motherwell.
COMPOSITION
Enamel Spray paint is an oil based paint, It is made of oil-based color pigments and volatile hydrocarbons like propane, n-butane, and isobutane. Cans containing compressed aerosol spray paint are common. Aluminum is used to produce spray paint cans so they are more durable. Spray paint is based on oil, and so it is water resistant as well as waterproof.

On the contrary, The materials used to make acrylic paints include plasticizers, silicon oils, defoamers, stabilisers, metal soaps, and acrylic resins or acrylic polymer emulsions that are water soluble.
SPECIFIC PROPERTIES
For being oil based and made up of volatile hydrocarbons the enamel spray paint is the most likely to be waterproof but very volatile in nature. It is also not soluble in water. When sprayed, the water in the paint evaporates immediately, leaving a flexible acrylic layer. Because the color is permanent and stable, Artists can repaint without bleeding and create a laminated surface effect.

But, Although acrylic paint is water-soluble, once dried, it becomes water-resistant. The acrylic paint can resist heat better than other types of paints. The beauty of using acrylic paint lies in its ability to give both transparencies of watercolor and texture of oil paint.
KEY FEATURES
Spray brushes, spray cans, spray booths, and spray guns are used to apply the paint. Traditional brush paints take longer to dry than spray paint. Spray paint works well on non-porous materials like poster board, wood, glass, and metal for both indoor and outdoor applications. Instead of using more conventional art surfaces, graffiti artists employ spray paint to create Street Art and Graffiti art on the inside and outside of buildings, trains, and other structures. Spray paints that are oil based are discovered to be excellent rust proofing for metal surfaces.

In opposition, Acrylic paint is applied on walls, wood, canvas, and the majority of other surfaces including those that will be outside. The same finished acrylic painting might resemble a watercolor, gouache, or oil painting, or it might have its own unique traits that are impossible to achieve with other media, depending on the amount of diluted paints with water or depending on the viscosity of the acrylic gels or paste.
SURFACE OR MEDIA
Spray paint is applied to a variety of surfaces easily since it comes out as a mist. Traditionally, spray painting has been employed on billboards and other non-porous surfaces including wood, metal, glass, ceramic, stone, and plastic.

Although, Acrylic paint has the capacity to bind to a wide range of surfaces, and mediums can be employed to change this ability. Paper, canvas, and a variety of other materials can all be painted with acrylics. The majority of artists' most popular painting ideas are acrylic paintings on canvas.
OTHER SPECIFIALITIES
Spray painting is excellent for creating multi-layered artworks since it dries faster than other types of painting. It is even more useful for short painting projects because it may be used on pre-shaped frames. Spray painting is a type of graffiti art.

Instead, When used in thin layers or washes, acrylics can be utilised to create effects that resemble watercolor and other water-based media. Gel and molding paste can be used to build up thick layers of paint and are occasionally used to create paintings with relief characteristics. Acrylic colors used by professional artists are created and designed to resist chemical reactions from exposure to water, ultraviolet light and oxidization.
TOXICITY AND VEGAN FRIENDLY
Spray paint is more expensive and needs working in a well-ventilated environment. This is impossible to do in a closed room. Furthermore, it contains volatile hydrocarbons, which enhance the risk of cache fires and are not good for breathing. As an oil based spray paint, mineral like spirit is required to clean hands or exterior surfaces.

Yet, When handled properly, acrylics are generally quite safe to use. However, some acrylic paint is not eco-friendly as it contains propylene glycol and other substances that are harmful to the environment but not for individuals. In a similar manner, acrylic paints are vegan because they are made from acrylic polymer resin and pigment.
